Grandmothers always seem to have the best cakes—and my grandma was no different.

No matter the reason, my grandma always had a cake on the table at a gathering. There was something about the way she made her sweets that was so special—it was probably decades of practice.

One of my favorites, her Bisquick crumb cake, is a no-frills dessert that comes together in under an hour.

My Grandma’s Bisquick Crumb Cake

Grandma's crumb cake is as simple as it is sweet.

The recipe starts with original Bisquick mix as the base of the cake, along with sugar, eggs, milk, butter, and vanilla extract. The result is a cakey but light creation that I could eat on its own.

The crumb topping uses coconut flakes, brown sugar, chopped nuts—whichever you prefer—butter, and milk. After the cake comes out of the oven, this topping is layered over the cake and broiled. The result is a gooey, nutty, caramelized crumble that combines the sweetness of coconut with the lightness of the cake.
