There are two types of candy lovers in the world: those who revel in the lip-puckering tartness of citric acid-coated candy, like Sour Patch Kids and Warheads, and those who’d rather not have their sweets burn the roof of their mouth (fair enough).
I belong to the camp of sour lovers—specifically in gummy candy form. And, if there’s one thing that’s true of sour candy fans everywhere, it’s that we are unflinchingly loyal to the treats we know. Whether you opt for Haribo Sour S’ghetti or are a Trolli Sour Crawler stan, sour candy is something of an acquired taste (in fact, only one in eight adults favor it). So, when you stumble upon a confection that strikes the perfect balance of sweetness, tartness, and chewiness—a feat trickier than you’d think—you’ll likely return to it again and again.
Since sour sweets still err on the side of niche, the options aren’t as extensive as chocolates or gummies. But now, there’s a new zingy treat on Trader Joe’s shelves and, according to one fan, it’s the “best candy they have made in years.”
Trader Joe's Releases New Sour Strawberry Candy Belts
Several Trader Joe’s customers have recently spotted tubs of Sour Strawberry Candy Belts in stores. They’re reminiscent of the iconic fruity and gummy belts found in candy stores and movie theaters and come in a classic strawberry flavor that has unsurprisingly attracted sour candy fans from all corners of the internet.
“Oh no, my favorite candy at a grocery store I frequent every week… what could go wrong,” commented a shopper on the Trader Joe’s subreddit. “This is dangerous news,” another Redditor chimed in.
“Trader Joe’s dropping this right after I said I was going to stop buying so much candy at Trader Joe’s is diabolical,” a shopper shared on Instagram. “I’ll take 14 of ‘em.”
We don't know if the chain has plans to release additional flavors, or if the sour candy belts will be a year-round product, but here's hoping TJ's has discovered an untapped potential in the sweets market and considers rolling out more pucker-inducing treats. Until then, at least we have these new strawberry belts to enjoy.
