Soda brands are going after our old-fashioned hearts this year, with releases like Coca-Cola Orange Cream, Pepsi Wild Cherry & Cream, and Olipop Peaches & Cream bringing back retro flavors in a big way. Even several ’80s classics have roller-skated back pon the soda scene, proving that vintage vibes are in.

Now, A&W is joining the trend with a brand-new soda that might be even more nostalgic than its iconic root beer.

A&W Launches New Ice Cream Sundae Soda

A&W just announced it’ll be rolling out an Ice Cream Sundae soda, a sweet, fizzy throwback that’ll taste like you’re pulling up a stool at an old-school ice cream counter. And since A&W practically bottles nostalgia with its beloved root beer, we have a feeling this one’s going to be good.

This limited-edition soda promises to hit on all the classic components of a sundae: vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, even a hint of sprinkles, and a cherry on top.

While a root beer base seems like a no-brainer (hello, root beer float in a can), A&W hasn’t confirmed whether it’ll be drawing from its most iconic soda variety. The brand is just as famous for its cream sodas, and according to the press release, this drink blends “sweet vanilla ice cream with the rich indulgence of fudge,” without mentioning root beer at all. So, it might just be a completely new kind of soda—one that tastes like a spoonful of ice cream sundae in every sparkling sip.

Fans already have high expectations. “I bet this is going to be delicious,” one Redditor wrote. Even root beer skeptics are intrigued: “I don’t really like root beer, but this is going to be amazing.”

Originally, the soda was set to launch in February, but now we know the flavor won’t officially roll out until August. Yes, that's a while to wait, but it’ll arrive just in time to capture the taste of nostalgia that always comes with the final days of summer.

A&W Ice Cream Sundae will be available in both regular and zero-sugar versions, sold in 12-ounce 12-packs.

August might feel like a lifetime away, but Keurig Dr Pepper (A&W’s parent company) is making sure we stay distracted with new sodas in the meantime. Dr Pepper Blackberry, 7Up Tropical, and even rumors of a Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut comeback should do a fine job of keeping our fridges stocked—at least until this old-timey treat finally arrives.
