Who else spent several nights over the recent holiday season watching “The Holiday” again and again? I know it wasn’t just me. From what I saw on social media, the mid-2000s film starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black was the comfort movie of the 2024 holiday season for lots of other people, too.
Well, Winslet recently showed up on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and the host peppered her with questions from his famous Colbert Questionnert, 15 questions he asks celebrities that “cover the full spectrum of human experience.” One of those questions is, “What is the best sandwich?”
What I find interesting is that often, the answer to that question is something simple, something that brings comfort. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ answer was the classic BLT. John Krasinski opted for a meatball sub. And Ryan Gosling’s answer took us back to the comforts of childhood: an ice cream sandwich.
But perhaps Winslet chose the most comforting and relatable sandwich of all.
Kate Winslet’s Go-To Sandwich
When asked what the best sandwich is, Winslet had a winning answer.
“I think probably just grilled cheese,” she said. “You can’t beat a good grilled cheese.” And she’s right. You can’t.
Winslet elaborated that she prefers butter over mayo, and she leaves the crusts on. As for the cheese, it’s “definitely got to be a good sharp Cheddar.”
While the pair didn’t discuss grilled cheese’s ultimate BFF, also known as tomato soup, I think you can always crank up the comfort factor of grilled cheese by serving it with what my kids used to call “grilled cheese dip.”
In our house, American cheese and mozzarella are the preferred fillings for a simple grilled cheese, but to be frank, any choice will do as long as it's gooey and melty. Stuffed in between two pieces of toasted, crispy bread, it’s pure comfort food all the way.
