Ramen comes in many forms, but they all seem to satisfy the same craving for savory, umami-rich meals. Traditional ramen is a thorough, complex dish that I can’t live without now. It’s not something I grew up with, so I’m making up for all the lost years by eating it any chance I get.
A dish like Tonkatsu Ramen is one I always go out to eat because the recipe takes some know-how and a little extra time. When I’m still craving ramen but don’t want to go for something difficult, the dorm room cook comes out of me. I aim for simple recipes that still resemble a comforting ramen meal without the hassle.
One two-ingredient recipe that I turn to again and again is our Cheesy Ramen Noodles. The recipe comes together in a mere five minutes and tastes better than meals that require twice the effort.

“On my goodness, I had this when I was a little kid. Its cheesy goodness is like the comfort of a thousand grandmas…or maybe this is my nostalgia talking. But it's actually delicious."

How to Make Cheesy Ramen Noodles
There’s not much to this recipe, which is why I love it. You only need ramen noodles, cheese, and water to make this recipe work. Plenty of reviewers speak to how good this recipe tastes with only noodles and cheese. The cheese you choose obviously changes the dish as do the noodles.
“The trick to this is to use good cheese,” says reviewer hdogg4709. “If you use something that's too processed, sometimes it won’t melt or just not taste good.”
The recipe calls for a slice of American cheese, but this ingredient can be substituted with any of your favorite cheeses. There are also several kinds of flavored ramen noodles that can change the flavor, like miso, soy, or spicy noodles as well as chicken, beef, or shrimp.
If the ramen comes with a seasoning packet, use that in the ramen as well. First, add water to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add ramen noodles and cook until tender. Once the noodles are ready, pour out the water, then stir in a seasoning packet and cheese, mixing until combined.

If you want to take this cheesy ramen to the next level, several ingredients make this recipe even better without much extra work. Butter is one of them. Adding a tablespoon will help accentuate the flavor of the cheese. A pinch of salt also works wonders, as does some chili oil, sesame oil, furikake, or green onions.
“I first had this recipe in Korea,” says reviewer Lori A. “The cooks would add hot dog slices or chunks of Spam and frozen corn kernels or frozen peas.”
Tips from the Allrecipes Community
A simple recipe like this is open to so many additions. Check out how the Allrecipes community made this recipe their own:
- “This dish was SO GOOD,” says reviewer io2120. “Of course, I had to switch it up a little bit: After the noodles cook for two minutes, pour out half the water. Put back on low heat and add the whole seasoning packet. Scramble an egg into it with a fork until cooked. Mix in 1/2 tablespoon butter and two slices American cheese until melted.”
- “My wife and I have been making this for ten years, except we use Fritos Jalapeno Cheddar Flavored Cheese Dip,” says Allrecipes member troyandkatecomcastnet.
- “I've been doing a variation on this since college,” says reviewer JChester. “I NEVER use the seasoning packet and ALWAYS add butter, garlic powder, Parmesan (bottled), bacon bits (artificial), and mushrooms (pieces and stems). Whenever my DW is gone and I'm left to my own 'Bachelor Chow' devices, it's my go-to guilty pleasure!”
