The consistency of McDonald’s menus across the U.S. makes it an always-welcome pit stop. When you’re far from home, however, you may come across an unfamiliar food or drink on the beloved chain’s menu—or find yourself ordering your own state’s specialty before you remember where you are. These are the regional McDonald’s items we think are worth a cross-country road trip—and are secretly hoping McDonald’s will one day bring to menus nationwide.
The Regional McDonald's Items We Want To Try
Hatch Green Chile Double Cheeseburger
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Green chiles bring the heat to a classic McDonald’s double cheeseburger that you can only find in the Hatch chile’s home state, New Mexico.
Lobster Roll
Allrecipes / McDonald's
People in New England love a lobster roll, and come summertime, McDonald’s releases a version even locals can get on board with at about half the cost of lobster rolls in the region. The McLobster rolled out nationwide in 1993, but now you’ll only find it seasonally in select states on the East Coast.
Spam Platters
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Where but Hawaii could you find Spam alongside sausage and eggs on a breakfast menu? Mickey D’s offers its breakfast platters three ways, all served with rice, eggs, and either Spam or Portuguese sausage (or both).
McTeri Deluxe
Allrecipes / McDonald's
We're not saying McDonald's plays favorites, but it has certainly given its Hawaii restaurants a little extra love with specials, like the McTeri Deluxe. The burger is coated in McDonald's signature teriyaki sauce and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo on a fluffy bun. The McTeri Deluxe isn't available all the time, but fans love to see the limited-time burger's return.
Haupia Pie
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Haupia, a Hawaiian pudding-like coconut dessert, fills flaky fried pies that you’ll only find in the Aloha State.
Fried Taro Pie
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Filled with taro, a purple root vegetable that grows in the Pacific Islands, these fried pies hold a permanent place on McDonald’s menus in China and have popped up on menus in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hawaii. While it’s only available seasonally in Hawaii, it’s a favorite amongst customers.
Fried Apple Pies
Allrecipes / McDonald's
It seems we can consider Hawaii the unofficial McDonald’s pie capital of the U.S. It’s the only state sanctioned to fry its apple pies, which, you may remember, used to come fried at all McDonald’s restaurants before the chain decided baking them would be better.
Strawberry and Crème Pie
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Surprise! This rare Strawberry and Crème Pie isn’t found in Hawaii, at least not now. It hails from Oklahoma, where a company called Bama produces all of McDonald’s pies. While the sweet strawberry and vanilla-flavored crème pie has ventured outside of the Sooner state, the fruity dessert is only available at select McDonald’s restaurants and, typically, only for a limited time. So, if you want the Strawberry and Crème Pie any time of year, you will have to take a trip to Oklahoma.
Guava and Crème Pie
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Once again, pies prove to be a regional delicacy. The Guava and Crème Pie resembles a Latin American pastry called guayaba y queso. McDonald's releases this tropical dessert every once in a while, typically in warmer states, like Florida and, you guessed it, Hawaii. However, the Guava and Crème Pie has been known to pop up in other parts of the U.S., too, so keep your eyes peeled.
Denali Big Mac
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Honoring Denali, the tallest peak in North America, this Big Mac has bigger patties and more special sauce than the Big Mac you can get anywhere else in the States. The extra-large burger is only available in the state with its namesake mountain, Alaska.
Biscuits and Gravy
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Biscuits and gravy are a staple breakfast item in the South, which is why you can only get this comforting meal at Mickey D’s in the southern states. Look for it on the breakfast menu in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Vernors
Allrecipes / McDonald's
Anyone who has tried Vernors ginger ale knows why it has remained a fan favorite for the past 150 years—especially in the drink's hometown, Detroit. In 2015, McDonald's added Vernors soda to its Detroit menu for a little hometown flair.
Steak, Egg, and Cheese Bagel
Allrecipes / McDonald's
While McDonald’s officially added its bagel breakfast sandwich to nationwide menus for the first time, there are still some regional iterations—like the Steak, Egg, & Cheese Bagel, which is a staple menu item in some parts of the country. It’s made with steak, scrambled egg, American cheese, grilled onion, and breakfast sauce on a toasted, buttery bagel.
