Key Takeaways
- Little Debbie is launching a new mashup of two fan-favorite bakery treats.
- The new snack cake looks like a version of Little Debbie's Cloud Cakes, which disappeared from shelves years ago.
There are a few snack innovators we can always count on when our pantry’s in a rut: Pop-Tarts, Oreo, and Cheez-It, to name a few. But one of the most inventive of them all? Little Debbie.
The time-honored bakery has been churning out iconic snacks for decades and still manages to keep things fresh with seasonal drops and unexpected mashups. Even in a crowded snack aisle, Little Debbie somehow always manages to stand out.
How do we know the bake shop won’t stop creating? Because just when you think it has done it all, the company starts combining its most iconic treats into brand-new hybrids. How many brands even have a deep enough bench of snack hits to pull that off?
Last year, the brand merged cult-classic Cosmic Brownies with Mini Muffins to create Cosmic Mini Muffins. And, more recently, Little Debbie dropped Nutty Buddy Creme Pies, a mashup of its crispy Nutty Buddy bars and soft, sweet Oatmeal Creme Pies.
Now, the beloved bakery is going full-on Franken-Debbie again—this time fusing its beloved Nutty Buddy bars with a nostalgic treat that hasn’t been seen in years: Cloud Cakes.
Little Debbie Launches New Nutty Buddy Cakes
Little Debbie just confirmed the launch of its latest snack, Nutty Buddy Cakes. It’s basically a dream come true for anyone who misses Cloud Cakes and lives for Nutty Buddy.
If you don’t remember Cloud Cakes, the vanilla sponge treats were Little Debbie’s not-so-subtle answer to Twinkies—although many fans argued they actually tasted better than the iconic Hostess cakes. “Little Debbie makes a far better-tasting Twinkie,” one Redditor boldly reported.
Although Little Debbie never officially announced Cloud Cakes’ discontinuation, fans have noted their absence from store shelves for years. But now, in a clever twist, the fluffy cakes are making a comeback, but this time with a full-scale chocolate-peanut butter treatment.

Instead of the crispy wafer layers you get with a traditional Nutty Buddy, the new Nutty Buddy Cakes feature a soft, pillowy yellow sponge cake stuffed with a creamy peanut butter filling and coated in a thin layer of chocolate frosting. The subtle vanilla flavor from the original Cloud Cakes is still there, but now it’s paired with the rich, salty-sweet combo that makes Nutty Buddy a legend.
“Shoppers are looking for new ways to enjoy their go-to flavor combinations,” said Erica Cunningham, Little Debbie's product manager, in an emailed press release. “Big Pack Nutty Buddy Cakes deliver just that—a soft, cake-style snack with all the peanut butter and chocolate flavor fans expect from the Nutty Buddy name.”
And fans are already lining up for a bite. “Ohhhhhh can’t wait for this,” one Instagram commenter gushed. “I live for Nutty Buddy stuff,” wrote another. Some are even floating the idea of deep-frying them, just as you might treat a classic Twinkie.
It’s no surprise that America’s No. 1 snack cake brand has enough classics in its catalog to start making mashups, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting when it does. The new Nutty Buddy Cakes will be available soon in a Big Pack containing 10 individually wrapped cakes. And when they hit shelves, you better believe we’ll be packing our pantries.
