Key Takeaways

  • Costco is selling the chocolate protein shakes that our editors swear by.
  • The shakes come in a case of 10 for $32.49, making them about $3.25 per bottle.

The biggest draw for warehouse club shoppers, whether shopping at Costco, Sam’s Club, or BJ’s, is the significant savings that come with buying items in larger amounts than you usually get at the grocery store.

The memberships are super helpful for families, of course, but they’re also beneficial for anyone who wants to stick to a budget, like my young adult son. He’s a bodybuilder, and he’s very diligent with his meal prep. Buying in bulk helps keep down his costs, so he has a Costco membership that he uses to buy food for his meals—and a lot of that food is high in protein.

There’s good news for my son and anyone else who shops at Costco and is looking for products that are protein rich. The store now carries his favorite brand of protein shake at a price that’s definitely better than our local grocery store.

Core Power Chocolate Protein Shakes at Costco

It’s not unusual for me to text my kids, “I’m going to the store. Do you need me to pick anything up?” The one time my son asked me to pick up Fairlife's Core Power shakes for him, I did a bit of a double-take when I saw the shelf price: $4 a bottle. I grabbed two bottles and then, in my budget-minded, motherly wisdom, I also picked up a six-pack of another, less expensive brand, thinking I’d find him something just as good that would save him money.

Nope. He tried one. The rest of the six-pack is still in the kitchen cabinet. Why does he love Core Power so much?

“Core Power offers an unbeatable protein-to-calorie ratio, getting its protein from filtered milk that is readily bioavailable,” he said, sounding as if he was familiar with the brand’s marketing materials. But then he added, “It tastes nothing like a protein shake. You can serve it as regular chocolate milk at dinner, and no one would be able to tell they were having a protein shake.”

There you have it. The nutrition works for his needs, and it tastes really good.

He’s not the only one who raves about these shakes. Allrecipes’ senior editor Courtney Kassel loves them as much as my son.

“This is the best protein drink I've tried by a long shot. It tastes just like chocolate milk—and better yet, it's lactose-free, so I don't have to worry about a stomachache afterward,” she said. “It's also my partner's grab-and-go breakfast of choice on super busy days or after the gym."

Our editorial director, Devon O’Brien, is a fan, too. She has a brilliant idea that may take these shakes to the next level. She wants to try adding the Core Power shake to her Ninja Creami, the Oprah-approved appliance that makes ice cream-making a breeze, to turn the drink into a protein-packed creamy, frozen treat.

The Costco savings, when you go through as many shakes as my son and his bodybuilding buddies, can really add up. Compared to the $4 bottle at my local grocery store, the same size bottles of Core Power Chocolate Protein Shake come out to $3.25 per bottle when bought in Costco’s case of 10 for $32.49. That’s a $7.50 savings, and for anyone who drinks a shake a day, it adds up to roughly $22.50 a month, which almost pays for my kid’s monthly gym membership. Not too shabby.
