There are few foods as versatile as the sandwich. You can keep them simple, like a grilled cheese or PB&J, or adorn your bread with as many ingredients as you want, like a piled-high club sandwich or a savory croque monsieur with a cheesy, crispy outer layer.

Learning someone’s go-to sandwich order can be like taking a peek directly into their soul, which might just be why it’s late night host Stephen Colbert’s very first question on his segment, “The Colbert Questionert.” While many guests might think, “What is the best sandwich?” is just a soft-ball question, their answers actually reveal a lot.

Through “The Colbert Questionert,” we’ve learned that married couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski don’t share the same taste in sandwiches—though they both love a savory, melty bite. (Blunt chose a classic Cuban and Krasinski opted for a meatball sub.)

We also know that the always-charming Ryan Gosling commits to the bit thanks to his response, “ice cream [sandwich].” And, of course, the “Born in the U.S.A.” singer, Bruce Springsteen, loves none other than the American classic peanut butter and jelly—with a glass of milk and at 3 a.m., no less.

So, we’ll be honest, when Elton John took “The Colbert Questionert,” we thought the performer would give a response with a sandwich fit for, well, Sir Elton John. Instead, the “Rocket Man” singer surprised us with his answer.

Elton John's Favorite Sandwich

“I’m a plain guy,” he said.

And what does a “plain guy” from London enjoy? A “cheese and tomato” sandwich, of course.

Now that we know the answer, we aren’t sure why we were surprised. A cheese and tomato sandwich is pretty much a U.K. classic, akin to our beloved PB&J. Even though it sounds like it, it’s not quite like the Southern-loved tomato sandwich, which is made with a ripe tomato, mayo, salt, and pepper on white bread.

No, even though a tomato sandwich is about as basic as you can get, the Brits keep it even simpler.

“Anything on that [sandwich] or just the cheese and the tomato and we’re done?” Colbert asked John.

“No, cheese and tomato [is] fine [on] whole wheat bread,” John responded.

It really is as easy as that—and, we have to say, we dig it. Next time we go to make our summer tomato sandwich, we won’t think twice about slapping a piece of cheese on it while we gleefully dance around the kitchen to “Bennie and the Jets.”
