Key Takeaways
- Store-bought dips and salsas make for a quick and easy, yet nutritious pick for busy snackers.
- One flavorful avocado salsa in particular is a new favorite that goes beyond chips and can be used in many recipes as well.
I love nothing more than spying something shiny and new on the grocery store shelf that I haven’t tried yet. Especially if it’s an easy and convenient snack to carry my family through a busy day. From Costco’s Cashew Clusters to Trader Joe’s famous pretzels, our pantry is always stocked with goodies to test out. But when it’s a fresh product featuring fruits and veggies that my kids will actually eat? It’s like hitting the grocery lottery.
Such was the case when we spotted Good Foods Avocado Salsa at our local store and gave it a taste. When I say we emptied the whole 12-ounce container before we even finished unloading the rest of the groceries, I’m not exaggerating. Even my pickiest eater was a fan—and it’s not hard to see why.
Good Foods Avocado Salsa Is Our Family-Favorite Store-Bought Dip
This avocado salsa isn’t a new offering, but it’s new to us. The dip originally came out in 2016 and, according to the brand, is a fan favorite. It is made with tomatillos, Hass avocados, jalapeño peppers, cilantro, lime juice, salt, and garlic. The first bite bursts with bright, fresh flavor with the perfect balance of acidity and spice. The predominant flavor comes from the tomatillos, with the avocado lending a creamy undertone that mellows it all out. As for the consistency, it is more in line with a thinner, cantina-style salsa than a thicker, guacamole-style dip. It’s no wonder we plowed through a hefty helping of chips and dip.
Good Foods
The best part is, unlike some of our other grocery go-tos, which come exclusively from Costco or Trader Joe’s, this brand is widely available from major retailers (including Costco! Plus Target, Sprouts, Fresh Thyme, Kroger, and more).
I would say the only downside is that, since it’s perishable and doesn’t contain preservatives, it only lasts three to five days once opened—though that has yet to be a problem in my house. If you do find yourself with leftovers and are nearing the end of the shelf life, the salsa can be frozen for up to six months, according to the product page.
How to Use Store-Bought Avocado Salsa in Recipes
As it is, this store-bought avocado salsa is a tasty dipper on its own with a bag of tortilla chips. It is also a flavorful addition to any number of recipes, including the obvious—tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and the like—as well as a less obvious topper for salads, eggs, or even grilled proteins, from steak to chicken to shrimp.
Reviews on the product page reveal we’re not the only stans. One person wrote, “This is the ideal dip with good tortilla chips. It tastes absolutely fresh and packed with flavor. The ingredients look, smell, and taste delicious.” Another added, “I am hooked on this salsa, which is made with tomatillos, avocado, and not much else.”
Others are spreading the word like me: "So to say that my wife and I love this would be a gross understatement!…We bring this to friends' BBQs, family gatherings, and almost always find new fans!"
Recipe Tip
